7 Natural bite and sting remedies

It’s summertime, and you know what that means: attack of the insects and mosquitoes. You might be one of a lucky type who rarely attract bites, or you might be someone skeeters like to feast on.

Next time you, or your kids, get stung or bitten, here are seven all-natural home remedies will relieve itching, stinging, and swelling fast.

  • 1 Ice

Ice constricts the blood vessels, which minimizes the spread of histamine, which triggers the allergic reaction. Apply an ice pack or bag of frozen peas for about 15 minutes every few hours, or as needed.

  • 2 Vinegar

Vinegar neutralizes the venom from bees, which calms the sting. Soak a cotton ball in diluted white or apple cider vinegar and apply to the affected area. Use equal parts vinegar and water.

  • 3 Milk

Dab milk soaked cotton ball onto the bite or sting. The proteins in milk calm inflammation and reduce the redness and swelling cause by a bug bite or sting.

  • 4 Tea Tree Oil

As well as bringing down the swelling of a bite or sting, the oils in tea tree oil disinfect the bite or sting. It also acts as a natural mosquito repellent.

  • 5 Lavender Oil

Lavender has both anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. Similar to tea tree oil it also serves as a mosquito repellent. Use lavender oil by diluting with a carrier oil, such as coconut or olive oil, before applying to the affected area.

    .

  • 6 Basil

Crush the fresh basil leaves into a paste and apply directly to the bite. Cover with a bandage. Packed with menthol, basil creates a cooling sensation, which helps relieve the itch.

  • 7 Lemon Balm

Lemon balm is a natural antihistamine so relieves the itching caused by a mosquito bite. Treat lemon balm as you would basil. If you have multiple bites, place the leaves into netted laundry bag and place in the bathtub as it fill. The oils will be released into the water and help soothe the all-over itch.
